About the citizenship test

The citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet) is a test of knowledge about Swedish society. The knowledge requirement for Swedish citizenship can be met by passing the test, but the knowledge can also be shown in other ways. The test is run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR). This page gathers what is known about the test, with UHR, the Swedish Migration Agency, the Citizenship Act and the ordinance on the citizenship test as sources.

What is the citizenship test and who has to take it?

The requirement to know about Swedish society has applied since 6 June 2026 (SFS 2026:447). It also applies to applications that had already been submitted on that date.

The requirement applies to applicants aged 16 to 66. You can show the knowledge instead with a pass grade in social studies (samhällskunskap) or basic social studies subjects (grundläggande samhällsorienterande ämnen) from compulsory school, upper secondary school, a folk high school at upper secondary level or adult education (komvux). The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) can also grant an exemption for personal reasons.

Nordic citizens who become Swedish citizens by notification (anmälan) do not need to meet the knowledge requirement. Nor do stateless people born in Sweden who are under 21 and become citizens by notification.

You cannot sign up for the test on your own initiative. The Swedish Migration Agency sends a referral letter (anvisningsbrev) to the people who are to take the test.

What is the test like?

The test is in Swedish, taken on paper and made up of multiple-choice questions with four options each, one of them correct. Wrong answers do not cost points.

UHR has not yet published the time allowed or the number of questions for the next sitting. The first test, in August 2026, was a trial test, and the time allowed was generous.

The test is written in Swedish at a functional level (funktionell nivå). On the day you may bring a pencil or propelling pencil, an eraser and simple earplugs. You can apply for extra time, and if you have a visual impairment you can also apply for large print. You show the need with a certificate when you register.

How many correct answers do you need to pass?

For the August 2026 test, UHR sets the pass mark afterwards, once the test has been held. When we last checked (1 October 2026), the results were due to be published at the end of October. Claims that you need 45 out of 60 do not come from UHR.

How much does the citizenship test cost?

The first sitting in 2026 was free of charge. Under the ordinance on the citizenship test (SFS 2026:451), taking the test costs 2,000 kr from 2027, paid to UHR. Stateless people who have been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority do not pay the fee.

The fee for the citizenship application itself, paid to the Swedish Migration Agency, is separate.

How do I register?

When we last checked (1 October 2026), registration for the test was closed. UHR will say when registration opens for the next sitting, and you need to register again for each new sitting.

When registration is open and you have received a referral letter from the Swedish Migration Agency, you register at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se. You log in with BankID, Freja or your personal identity number and the code in the letter.

When is the next sitting?

When we last checked (1 October 2026), UHR had not announced a date for the next sitting. The first test was held on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. UHR says information about the next sitting will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn.

What happens after the test?

The result appears in your account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se and is reported automatically to the Swedish Migration Agency, which uses it when it reviews your citizenship application. If you fail, UHR says you may get the opportunity to show your knowledge again, and that you should contact the Swedish Migration Agency to find out what applies to you.

How do I prepare?

UHR's study material Sverige i fokus can be used if you want to read up before the test. Read the material chapter by chapter, then practise questions.

A walkthrough of each chapter

The study material Sverige i fokus has thirteen chapters. Each chapter has its own walkthrough with practice questions.
